My Country ...from Fable for Independance Day

My Country ...from Fable for Independance Day

The evening of 9, 11 I wrote Flight 93. I had the entire company there to listen and record it. It was getting very late and we were all still watching the TV as the evening wore on between tracks. Living in New England at the time made it all the more intense as everyone there knew someone lost in the disaster. I had friends there and was trying to get in touch all day to no avail. We finished flight 93 around 10PM and started to play and sing my country almost like a prayer. We were all the emotional wreckage of the day and the music kept us from losing it altogether. The voices you hear are myself, my son John (the younger), Sean Galooli, and Sara Tallarico.
One of the company knew a very popular disk jockey in that market, Steve Valentine, and called him to let him know what was going on at the studio. He showed up around
11:30 and we recorded this tune just as you hear it now. I mixed it and Flight 93 back to back, gave a copy to Steve around 12:30 and it was on the air in that market at 1AM 9, 12 where it remained in rotation for 2 weeks.
It helped to heal us all and I hope sincerely it has the same effect for you on this Independence Day.
Regards to all in this house. Have a safe and happy holiday
John

On The Road Again

sailindog (01/23/08 19:38:54)   Tag: About The Music
On The Road Again Well ...it's off to the Pacific North West for yours truly. I'm headed for Port Townsend and points north and west from there. Leslie is relocating to the area and we are going to leave this Saturday. 2600 miles from here there is a land like no other. The music is great, the audiences are great, the food in wonderful, and I'll be back where my heart is truly at rest...at the sea.
I'm hoping to see my buddy Dave Fouch in Portland, OR and get in a little sailing while I'm out there and I promise to eat as many king crabs as possible.
I'll be playing all I can while I'm gone and I'll try to upload one more for you all before I go. You'll be hearing this stuff on the radio before long but it's been a lot of fun presenting it here. I've gotten to hear some very talented artists as well on my too few visits.
I would like to thank everyone who has listened to the work and for all of the gracious responses people have left. They are quite gratifying and humbling. Please accept my deepest appreciation for all the kind words.
I'll be on the road and away from the PC for 3 or 4 weeks, so I'd like to wish everyone in this house a safe and happy new year. I hope the music you all do gives you everything you hope for.
My Warmest Regards
John Crafton (Fearless Leader of Soft Wind Productions and Fable)

On the road west

sailindog (02/05/08 18:05:36)   Tag: Traveling
On the road west It's been a nutty couple of days trying to get to the west coast. We have been weathered in 3 times in sub zero temps and 100 MPH winds. It's been a real challange to drive in this weather and we were stuck on 84 west in Idaho at a gated stop for 8 hours before they turned everyone back to Utah. We are in eastern Oregon and there is anopther snow storm comming in tonight, 6 - 14".
If you ever decide to drive cross-country in the winter...take plenty of food, water, and blankets just in case. That said...its been a lot of fun.
I'll leave you all with my warmest regards and a picture worth a thousand words that wouldn't do the real view justice. Its a sight that could make you a poet.
John

We Made It !!!

sailindog (02/15/08 07:51:57)   Tag: Finally in Port Tonsend Washington
We Made It !!! Well kids, were here...lol, we cheeted death again. We got everything but frogs from the sky but we are here. Here is a small town on the coast in the north of Washington State. Port Townsend is a delightful spot like steppeing back into the 60's. All the hippys that made good in their 30's, 40's and 50's settled in this once thriving boat building town and turned it into one of the most artistic communities in the country. Nearly everyone here is a published author or musician or fine artist. Thr food is amazing and the people are friendly and involved with all the artistic events in the area. There are festivals every weekend starting in the spring and continue till the last possable moment of the fall.
I've been a lot of places but I don't know where you'd have to go to find a prettier place, nicer people, or more engaged audiences. The coffee house and bar sceene are thriving and the chance to hear really fine music is everywhere in this town. You even get a welcoming oppertunity to show your stuff at a half dozen open mics.
I highly recommend this spot for anyone who loves the water, mountains, good food, good music, and friendly artistic people. We're having a grand time.
I hope you are all well and I look forward to posting more about the trip as it unfolds. Till then,
My warmest regards to all
John

Commin Home

sailindog (02/19/08 18:26:15)   Tag: Traveling
Commin Home Made it out to Whidbey Island and checked out an amazing gorge and a few small towns on the Island and up the coast. We had a couple of uneventful ferry rides and great weather, Sunny, clear and 50's. It's really been a fun trip and I'm getting back on a plane tomorrow for Ohio where it’s 17 and snowing…yikes…lol.
If you ever get the chance to get to Pacific Northwest...TAKE IT !!!
This has to be one of the nicest places in this country and I've seen most of it. The people are friendly and engaging, the food is second to none, the scenery is startlingly beautiful, and the sea and bays are the bluest I've seen anywhere.
There are so many activities here for musicians; it's like being turned loose in a candy store.
We played at a place called the Upstage last night and tonight we play at the Uptown Cafe. The audiences are very kind and really listen. We also heard some incredible musicians here and managed to sell some cd's. All in all a great trip.
I hope this finds you all well and happy and I'll post a new tune when I get back to the studio Thursday. Lots of grist for the mill here...Till then,
Warmest Regards to all in this house.
John

Playing in Maryland

sailindog (03/01/08 18:24:01)   Tag: Gigs
Playing in Maryland I'll be at the pub in Perryville Maryland on Saturday the 8th of this month from 7 to whenever if anyone in the area would like to make the night out. The food is good and it's a nice place. I'll put the address and phone number information up in the next day or so when I have all the information.
Please let me know if you can go. I'll have 2 of my sons with me and maybe my brother and some other friends from the area.
Should be good time.

Later this month or the begining of April, I'll be playing at the upstage in Port Townsend Washington.
It's a great venue with a lot of fine players and lots of neat things to do in town. I'll post the date when I have it. Hope some of you can make it.
Regards to all
John

The Journey

sailindog (01/04/08 14:14:13)   Tag: About The Music
The Journey I sent some of this as a reply to a review I got on the song The Journey.
I include it here as a way to give a complete background to the story of the song.

I've been an off-shore sailor since I was a young man and it never ceases to give me joy to be out there where the world has a pulse you can feel at the wheel of a sailboat. The sea is like a fickle woman. One minute she's making you as happy as you've ever been in your life, and the next, she's trying to kill you. But like the hopeless romantic you must be to cross the sea in the first place, you go back for more.
This was a challenging trip to say the least and after the first two days of perfect sailing, it turned and tried to retire anyone out there for good. I'm a fairly accomplished foul weather sailor, but that storm spanked me like a red headed step child...lol.
I took my lead guitar player Sean and my eldest son John, both in their early 20's, on the trip, neither of whom had ever been sailing or at sea. They both thought it was a little nuts to be out there in such weather, but they never questioned my judgment or the duties they performed to keep us safe and afloat. I watched them turn from boys to men right there in front of me.
Four days of relentless wind and high seas are a challenge for a seasoned sailor. I must admit it was one of the proudest times of my relationship with them. They acquitted themselves as well as any men I've sailed with. With good spirits and good humor they faced what turned out to be a very perilous time with grace. I will always remember them as the men they became that week.
The Coast Guard was pulling seasoned watermen from the brink of destruction, and my new shipmates were as good as the test. The story of the Pamela Ann is related exactly as is unfolded for two watermen and their stricken vessel two miles off the coast of Cape May New Jersey in a storm they soon won't forget.
The trip got progressively more difficult for us as we continued up the coast on our forty foot sloop 'The Journey', bound for the protected waters of Rhode Island's Narragansett Bay. Most of that time was spent heeled over with the port deck in the water and six to ten foot waves breaking over our starboard side much of it in the dark.
A five day trip took nearly 10 and their faith in me, my skills as a sailor, the things they learned so well, and in our good ship will remain with me long into my memory. It's not for everyone to test their mantle in this way and after so many miles at sea, I am always humbled by those that do.
Johnny and Sean didn't cower...they are good men.

They will always have my warmest regards
John

John Crafton & Fable

sailindog (11/30/07 05:12:04)   Tag: About The Music
John Crafton & Fable John Crafton is from Baltimore Maryland and has lived in New England for most of his adult life. Years spent in Newport Rhode Island, Stow Vermont, and the coastal towns of Main, Nova Scotia, and the mid-Atlantic have matured the music. John was a formally trained piano and horn player in the 60's and a member of numerous rock bands in the late 60's and 70's when he learned to play guitar. In the 70's, He worked as a single act, singer / songwriter in New England and lived and played in Europe for a year and a half.  He formed the band Fable in 1977 in Baltimore and toured the mid-Atlantic developing a rich vocal harmony sound for which they became popular. Life and several incarnations of the band have kept him moving around the country in pursuit of his personal goals as a musician, sailor, & gentleman explorer. He currently resides in Akron Ohio, Baltimore Maryland, and Portland Oregon working for Soft Wind Productions as a producer and recording engineer. Whenever possible he is off-shore sailing. Everything else and the music of John Crafton can be found at www.softwindproductions.com.

Our mission is to bring the listener a pleasant and sometimes emotional repast centered in the time and  life experiences we all share. Acoustic instruments, beautiful harmonies, and the occasional keyboard or  electric guitar bring the story like lyrics to life in a way that is Fable's alone.

Fable continues to expand its audience and it is our hope to add you to our broadening family of listeners.
We welcome you.
