This was the first version of the song I got to hear. I love this thing. The switchup ending is particularly tasty. Your exlosion at around 2 is very powerful. Nice balance between vocals and the many instruments. (What a drumset huh?).

Dudes, this is an awesome tune. It pulls out a ton of emotion and can bring one to their knees.
I'll leave the mixing and technical stuff to the big boys. I'll just sit back and enjoy the heck outta this. Very powerful!

Heard this one last night too. And had to come back and listen this morning. I've been a fan of Nigels for a couple of years. The two of you complement each other. Well donr!

I am going to be a tad naughty and review this song, but with good intent :)
First I want to say thank you to ALL the reviewers here who gave so much praise and advice, thank you all.
My second thanks goes to Brian for the great honour he did me in making me his first collab partner, and I am sure there will be many more.
It is always an aprehensive momment when you first play the track that someone has sent you for you to work on,a mixture of emotions; excitement, worry, hoping that you can do a song justice.
When I first sat and listened to this, all my parts were there,it gave me everything I needed.
The mood suggested the lyrics so easily, the brooding opening,to the explosive conclusion.
It was a musical narrative, for words that it had already kind of wrote.
It will always remain one of my most fabvourite collabs,I look at it and know that it was one of those songs where time and space played no part in it coming into being.
We could have been in the same room,or half a universe away, and it would have still been all that it could be,
Thank you all for the reviews, and thank you Brian for such a powerful and moving song to work on with you.
Thank you.
Nigel.

When I saw that this was a collab with Mr Potter I just knew that it would be good.
Right from the start it did not dissapoint. A great song from Nigel with his excellent vocals and guitars but the drums and extra large production turned it into an epic power ballad.
Great work from both you guys and a top track.....loved it...Thanks.

Bri-an and Nigel...... this is right up my alley.... beautiful with intrigue .... powerful and musically interesting throughout.... you guys put your all in this! Glad I finally got to it!
Cool Stuff!

Hello Bri-an, I did not know that you also works with our wonderful Nigel. The title of this song is .... I was full in tension and have clicked on this track. The music matches wonderful with Nigels vocals. I like this song full of an outstanding atmosphere very very much.
It is a ideal song for my next radio-show in 14 days. Are you agree? Wonderful impressive collab and inspiration for my music. Goose-flesh!!!!!!
|
 |
Ok, I'll make it an even 30, lol. This song is great in the way it builds and the emotion just swells as it goes along until bam......it's all in. Kudos to both Bri-an on the instruments/percussions and Nigel on the vox and slidin. Well done gents!

Ok Bri....I'm the 29th caller man. I'll just have to live with that. If we want to talk emotion I'm not sure how this can be beat. Wonderful buildup and transition to the 'main event'. This is one pretty awesome piece by both you and Nigel. Takes some balls to pull this off like you guys did. Excellent playing, concept, and the sound sounds good here.....love it. Fave button. I love finding treasures like this! Peace ~ Blake

Wow, this is stellar! Such a great use of space and placement of all instruments. Vocals are excellent over the haunting background. I love the tension on this, very well crafted and your drumming dude ... well you would make Ludwig proud to sponsor you! A real player who has a great command of his craft, not to mentiion your sound! AWESOME DUDE!!
|
 |
Brian, I missed the first two takes! How the heck did that happen? This one is sooooo good,
the mix sounds outstanding to me. The song builds up really nice and at 2:26 when it goes cosmic....WOAH.... Excellent work Brian and Nigel!
|
 |
Since I didn't hear the other mixes,I will just comment on what I am hearing now.
Intro is good, would know that voice anywhere,Nigel !
Good collaboration between you two. If Dicarlo says it sounds better, then it has to be so,he is an artist at production ! Liking the tune.
Peace,

complete faith in your abilities and talents that you would tweak and mix this to your liking---you did just that!!!great work to all involved----all great musicians-producers listen and critique their own work and make adjustments as they go!! cheers brian you are one of my favorite artists anywhere!!nigel---killer man!
|
 |
Wow, with this long list of reviews, I'll have to simply wait my turn in line...
Power ballad indeed! Your music is well written Bri-an and I have come to know Nigel to be a lyrical poet. You guys work well together, although I'm learning fast that Nigel is some what of an institution with other online artists.
Alot of emotion in this without a doubt.
I'm not big on how a piece was mixed initially, I first and foremost listen for the content of the piece.
I heard alot of content here...

How the heck did this one slip by me. Two of my fave artists together. Wonderfully evocative intro with that studdering almost didj sound over some delightufllu understated piano. Love the sparseness of the backing behind Nigel's initial vocals, and the harmonies are just soooooo good. Excellent build up with stabs of guitar adding to the atmosphere. Nigel doesn't hold back on the vocals pouring his heart and soul into the track. I see that this track has generated a bit of debate. Not a production wiz myself but tend to agree with Di that there are sections where there is a bit of lack of bottom. The bass playing itself is cool but that's that absence of real bottom. Otherwise an absolutely sensational piece of work, as is to be expected considering who's involved. Sorry to be so late getting to the party.
Cheers
Brian

well my earphones think it's mixed and mastered very well.. we all have different ears and fears.. I'm thinking this song is so strong.. too much for some.. they can't just sing along..
but you've got me.. nigel's performance has mesmorized me.. didn't read the notes B.. as to who did what.. but it must be your powerful track that has brought nigel back.. once again to his most powerful vocal side.. just glad i was here for the ride.. cheers.. :-)

I like this song has a lot of emotion and when the drums and all come in is very strong

I particularly like the perfect interaction between Bri-an and Nigel. What an exciting, growing track. The few issues (for the "power part") were already mentioned, but I can hear the music and the intention, and it's a great dark song and a collab of you both masters, definitely.

I agree the first bit sounds much better particularly now you have your panning back but the end bit is clipping like crazy, especially the left channel.
|
 |
Great tune!
Personally, I'd like to hear the drums brought up even more at the end. There is a thunder going on there, but I have to struggle to hear more than the snare. Now, take that with a huge grain of salt because mixing/production is not my strength.
Love the tune!

This is one powerful song with the explosive sweep of creation - make that Creation. As other reviewers have mentioned, there's so much more going on than can be taken in at one listening. Every sound is in the right place at the right time, and they all blend well behind the best vocals I have heard from Sir Nigel - yet. You've both done yourselves proud!
|
 |
DiCarlo was right, the remix is on the money. I loved this one before, and it's even better now, Bri-an. Man, what a mood you two managed to create here. Amazing music, and one of the best collabs I've heard!
Four paws way up!
Peace,
Jim

MUCH BETTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :) THE INTRO IS PERFECT NOW!!!! :) GREAT MIX ON THE INTRO, EVERYTHING IS PLACED WHERE IT SHOULD BE, AND THE MIX IS VERY WELL BALANCED.
GOOD WORK, SO FAR!!!!! :)
OK, NOW COMES THE HARD PART, THE EXPLOSION OF ALL THE INSTRUMENTS!!!!!!! :)
HEY, I CAN ACTUALLY HEAR THE DRUMS NOW, AND ALL THE NICE FILLS YOU PLAYED!!!! :) THATīS COOL. EVERYTHING IS A BIT CLEARER AND MORE UP IN YOUR FACE NOW.
BUT, I WOULD STILL GO FOR A 4TH MIX, AND IīLL EXPLAIN WHY!!!!! :)
IT ALL STILL SOUNDS A BIT CRASHY AND TRASHY TO ME!!!! :)
REASON BEING IS THEREīS TOO MUCH MID RANGE!!!! LOOK AT THE EQ METER ON ANY PLAYER, (WINAMP, ETC) AND YOU`LL SEE ALL MID RANGE!!!!!! :)
VERY LITTLE BASS OR HIGHS AFTER 2:20!!!!! :)
PEOPLE TEND TO THINK THE CRASHY-TRASHY PIERCING SOUNDS COME FROM TOO MANY HIGHS, BUT ITīS USUALLY THE MIDS THAT CAUSE IT!!!!!! :)
I WOULD GO FOR A 4TH MIX OF THAT MID SECTION OF THE SONG, BUT THE INTRO IS PERFECT!!!!! :)
DONīT TOUCH ANYTHING BEFORE 2.20, ALL BEFORE THAT IS OK!!!!!! :)
GLAD YOU LISTENED TO MY SUGGESTIONS IN MY PM, BECAUSE THIS A 100% IMPROVEMENT OVER MIX 1 AND 2.
MOST PEOPLE SAID THE FIRST MIX WAS GREAT AND NEEDED VERY LITTLE OR NO IMPROVEMENT!!!!!!!!!!! :) LOL
THIS IS A PERFECT EXAMPLE OF IF YOU LISTENED TO ALL OF THOSE REVIEWS, YOU WOULDNīT HAVE WORKED FURTHER ON THIS, AND THE SONG WOULDNīT SOUND LIKE IT DOES NOW!!!!! :)
SO, I TAKE A BIT OF CRAP FROM PEOPLE BECAUSE OF MY HONESTY, BUT IīM NOT ABOUT HOLDING HANDS WITH PEOPLE, AND PATTING THEM ON THE BACK!!!!! :)
NOPE, I JUST WANT THEM TO IMPROVE, AND THAT THEIR MUSIC SOUNDS BETTER. :)
THATīS IT!!!!!!!!! :)
ITīS ALL ABOUT THE MUSIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)
PEACE,
D

Bri-an..........I'm quite a bit in AWE!!! This track is SO Heart gripping. WHEW!!! I am blown away.......the World of Popular music really suffers the loss of such GREAT music. This mix is FANTASTIC and your drum work drives me crazy. I'll tell ya again......I REALLY HOPE, we can work together, at some point. EXCELLENT TRACK!!!

Hi Bri-an
Had to listen twice before I could even take half of this song in. So much going on. I thought a wider stereo field in the intro would allow the individual instruments to be heard more clearly. There seemed to be a lot more going on in the right side than the left. Nice build up in tension and volume as the song progresses and the change at 2:25 is breathtaking.
The end section is busy and once again the individual instruments are a bit hard to differentiate. The slide guitar part is awesome but does dominate everything else and there seems to be a bit too much top end.
OK - all nitpicking aside this song is incredibly well written, arranged and played and Nigel's lyrics and vocals are stunning. Destined to be a classic and I'm really looking forward to Mix 3!

wow..BRIAN is hot and plugged in with nigel singing and all...i love the lyrics and the whole feel of the harmonies...matter of fact the musicianship is brilliant but i expect that and this one carried me along without me being aware of all the parts...Extremly intersting mix as well...not conventional but absolute power...oh my just hit the heavy bits.....yummmmmmy
WELL DONE GUYS...this is HUGE....reminds me of neil young doing his fusion but yu are getting a lot more depth and harmonies

Mix 2 Brian.
Interesting list of instruments .
This mix is better . Good that you say the mix is gonna be a challenge because it most certainly is !
This sounds wider.
Be interesting to hear where mix 3 takes this one.

THIS IS A MAJOR IMPROVEMENT OVER THE LAST MIX, AND YOUīRE GETTING CLOSER. :)
I WROTE YOU A VERY LONG REVIEW, BUT DECIDED NOT TO POST IT HERE.
INSTEAD, IīM SENDING IT TO YOU AS A PM. :)
BUT THIS IS A MAJOR IMPROVEMENT OVER THE LAST MIX. :)

As of NOV 29 I have re-posted the 2ND MIX comments welcomed !! THANX...b

Thanks for your comments! Indeed, i was aware of the mix..but like a kid in a candy store, I was excited as to get it out for all to listen... This being the FIRST collab i have ever done on the web and all.
I apprieciate and value you comments very much. I am presently working on a final mix....(is there really such a thing?? lol )
ABOVE is the "about" button which i have listed all the instruments i used to create this toon. all recorded manually acoustic yup.... "live off the floor"
The feat of this mixing job is ...and will be a tough task. I expect the second to be better...I suggest the third time... in case the second is not...will be better still !! LOL
thanks again my fellow muso's!!! bri-an

OK, I WAS THE FIRST TO REVIEW THIS SONG, AND ITīS INTERESTING TO READ THE REVIEWS THAT FOLLOWED. FIRST OFF, I SAID I LIKED THE CONCEPT, AND THAT NIGELīS VOICE WORKED WELL WITH IT. I ALSO LIKE WHATīS GOING ON WITH THE INSTRUMENTS, BUT ITīS ALL A BIT CHAOTIC AT THE MOMENT, AND NEEDS TO BE WORKED ON FURTHER.
I CHATTED WITH BRI-AN ON THE NEXUS CHAT LAST NIGHT, AND HE AGREES WITH ME 100%.
THIS HAS THE POTENTIAL TO BE A REALLY GOOD, WELL MIXED AND WELL PRODUCED SONG, BECAUSE BRI-AN HAS THE EQUIPMENT TO DO IT WITH. I CAN UNDERSTAND THAT SOME PEOPLE HAVE LIMITED EQUIPMENT AND ARE LIMITED, BUT IīVE SEEN BRI-ANīS STUDIO, AND HE CAN DO A HELL OF A LOT BETTER THAN THIS. :) LOL
LISTEN TO "THE RAT", NOW THATīS A GOOD PRODUCTION, AND THEREīS NO REASON HE CANīT MAKE THIS SONG SOUND JUST AS GOOD, AS IT WAS DONE IN THE SAME STUDIO.
ONCE AGAIN, TELLING EVERYONE THAT EVERYTHING THEY DO IS WONDERFUL DOESNīT HELP THEM. IT JUST MAKES THEM STAGNANT, AND THEREīS ALWAYS ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT.
JUST A NOTE; PEOPLE SAY MY PRODUCTIONS SOUND PERFECT, BUT EVEN SO, IīM STILL CONSTANTLY DOING REMIXES AND NEW MASTERINGS, BECAUSE I KNOW SOME OF THEM CAN SOUND EVEN BETTER.
IīM MY OWN WORST CRITIC. :)

I've retyped this several times. Nothing really reads back like it does the song any justice. Melodic, builds up so insistently, then starts to bust the place up in a very cool way. Nice to hear a track where everything works so well, compliments the other instruments, and unspools with a great sense of out-of-control-ness (my word, okay?). Another collab to be proud of Nigel and Bri-an!
Thanks for sharing this!
Peace,
Jim

Brian and Nigel.
Together on a track should be cool.
So play the damned song then.........
This opens very quietly : just letting the vocals from Nigel sit there.
And enfold.
When everything opens up and Nigels guitar enters the fray in true BOOM fashion it all really kicks up a notch in power and dynamics.
I actually love the title of this I did one called Too Die In Your Arms myslef but never got around to singing it....ah well.
Well I have read the other comments above me (they'll be below now though) and Dicarlo has hinted at the production : he's always honest which is a lot better than just writing for writing sakes. I get the impression there is a monster tune in here ...the slowburn into the dramatic finale ......class in its composition.
The mix is going to be difficult here because there is a lot going on across the frequencies and a lot of ups and downs......Nigels vocal works a treat at all points .
The cymbal at the start and digiridoo (?) along with the piano sound spectacular especially when the potterisms come along and give way to the vocal and soft pad.Close mic almost whispered full of emotion.
The music could be higher and still allow the vocals to come across as they are.
3rd time around now....totally cranked.
After a few listens the feel changes somehow focus changes.......
I'd agree with him though a little more work on the mix and you'll be rewarded with a bigger broader track.
Thats not to take away from what is a fantastic song........huge in its scale and performance.
The guitar wails sound like a wolf behind the solo....freaking glorious .
Tell you what it is this sounds live ........and I bet it would be great live too.
Congratulations to both Brian and Nigel it had to happen and really backs up all the good that can come from people collabing across the internet.
4th listen now (sounds like nerd) those words are great whoever wrote them ..
The bass needs more level it is bloody good !
That killer solo section with the wolf cries is absolutely freaking brilliant....outstanding.
Love the echo effect on Nigels voice too in there....
exit is subtle.
Cool song

I like this. The percussion is very good, as are the vocals. The vox are a touch
upfront, but the emotion is stark, and that is a good thing. I like the rockin' section
and think it is busy and a little confusing, which works well with the theme.
I agree with DI that the mix could be better, but I think it is pretty good right now.
I would probably start with everything lower and bring it up slowly so there is more
of a contrast when it kicks into high gear.
I like the guitar slides too.

the only negative I have about the mix is it needs a little volume. I missed the first 30 seconds because it was low hehe.
vocals are delivered with great emotion. I love when it kicks in. the guitar playing is great as are the drums and bass. I thought the drums were played exceptionally well.
Great job guys!

man a collab with brian and nigel---sorry dicarlo i disagree...lol..the emotion---the surrounding sounds are impeccable--the sounds--create the atmosphere in which this thrives---nigel drips with emotion----brian --your percussion work- it is spacious and really sets the mood and the table for a killer song---feeling you guys--thats what really makes this---yeah --let those vox rip! bammmm-- slap me in the face---rock out like the madmen ya are!!powerful! dynamic!!! mark

WAS WONDERING WHEN YOU WERE GONNA UPLOAD ANOTHER SONG?!. :)
THIS IS AN INTERESTING TRACK. I LIKE THE TOMS, KEYBOARDS AND ATMOSPHERES, AND NIGELīS VOICE WORKS WELL ON THIS. OH, AND THEN IT GETS BIG, BUT SOMEHOW VERY FAR AWAY IN THE DISTANCE AND NOT BIG AT ALL. SORRY, BUT THIS DOESNīT SOUND MIXED WELL AT ALL, AND DEFINITELY NOT MASTERED. YOU KNOW ME BRO, IīM HONEST, AND THIS DOESNīT HOLD A FEATHER TO YOUR PRODUCTION OF "THE RAT".
NICE TRACK, BUT NEEDS A LOT OF WORK.
JUST MY OPINION. :)
